Bristol blue glassware is made using a mixture of cobalt with molten glass, whch gives it a distinctive blue colour.

No moulds or machines are used in any part of the manufacturing process. Each glasswork is crafted using basic hand tools and traditional technques, making each piece very unique and extraordinary. A legacy item.

The Bristol artisans have been making stunning high-quality glassware and jewellery for over 30 years using time-honoured skills passed down over decades. Peter Sinclair and James Adlington together started this venture back in the late 80s when the traditional English glassmaking techniques were in severe danger of being lost forever. With the aim of reviving a glass-making tradition in Bristol, they were instrumental in re-establishing this legacy art form that had been lost for over 60 years. The company makes some of the finest free-blown glassware in England and train many apprentices to make high quality tableware and jewellery using simple ancient techniques and basic hand tools. Today, they are regarded as the ‘original’ blue glass manufacturers, keeping the art alive.
The blue glass is made using cobalt oxide or smalt. It starts out by using clear chunks of glass called ‘cullet’, which is cleaned and mixed with cobalt oxide, which alters the spectrum of light that is passed through it. It is then put overnight in the furnace at a temperature of about 1200 degrees centigrade using a process called ‘charging’. As the glass melts, it combines with the cobalt oxide producing the distinctive colour of the famous Bristol blue glass.
